A Quick Guide to Professional Dental and Wellness Associations

A Quick Guide to Professional Dental Associations Your Miami dentist is only as good as his or her commitment to ongoing education and professional development.  Dentistry is a dynamic field, and professionals must continually take proactive steps towards connecting with other professionals, learning about new technology, and staying in step with the latest news and trends.

One of the best ways to gauge your dentist’s commitment to his or her craft is by taking a good look at their professional associations.  Professional associations, like the American Dental Association, keep practitioners connected and add cohesion to the field overall.  These associations may also be the primary distributor of major medical news updates in some fields, placing even greater importance on the ways in which your health professional connects and works with their associations.

Assure a Smile has prepared this Quick Guide to Professional Dental and Wellness Associations to help patients learn more about the networks to which their dental professionals belong:

American Dental Association (ADA)

The ADA was founded in 1859, making it the largest and oldest national dental association in the world.  The ADA serves two primary functions:  First, it engages with the public to promote valuable oral health information.  Second, the ADA represents the dental industry in America.  Each month, the ADA publishes a collection of dental articles, research, and papers in the “Journal of the American Dental Association.”

American Academy of General Dentistry (AGD)

The AGD represents a large group of American and Canadian dental professionals.  Though a multi-national dentistry association, it ranks #2 in terms of size, second only to the ADA.

International Congress of Oral Implantology (ICOI)

The ICOI was founded in 1972 with a single goal in mind:  To help dental practices better serve their patients by providing the latest dental implant education to their entire dental team.  To date, the ICIO is the largest dental implant organization, comprised of general dentists, oral/ maxillofacial surgeons, periodontists, endodontists, and more.

World Clinical Institute of Clinical Lasers (WCLI)

The WCLI is led by an Executive Board and Professional Advisory Board led by some of the brightest and most well known doctors in the dental field.  Noteworthy members include past-president of the ADA, President Elect of the AACD, as well as other forward thinking dental organization founders.  The goal of the WCLI is to advance dental laser technology, education, and procedures in an effort increase patient outcomes.

Assure a Smile proudly represents membership and continual engagement in each of the aforementioned professional associations, as well as the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology  (IAOMT), International Association of Mercury Free Dentists (IAMFD) and International Association of Orthodontists (IAO).

Holistic Professionals Recommend a Sweet Breakfast Scramble

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Holistic Professionals Recommend a Sweet Breakfast ScrambleBreakfast is the most important meal of the day!  Miami dental professionals encourage patients to take a moment to cook breakfast each morning, as doing so may cause a cascade of positive health benefits.  Those who eat breakfast put a strong foot forward by starting their day with an arsenal of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates that do more than provide sustained levels of energy.

The most important thing to consider when cooking at home is variety, and this Blog article is here to help!  There are specific sets of macronutrients (listed below) that will satiate hunger while also priming the body with the vitamins and minerals needed to conquer Monday morning fatigue.

We will begin with a brief overview of these breakfast macronutrients.  Then, we will see how each can be combined to create a delicious breakfast.

The Building Blocks of Breakfast

The following macronutrients are the building blocks of a healthy breakfast (you may also find ways to incorporate many of these food items into lunch, dinner, and mid-day snacks):

1) Egg Whites

2) Sweet Potatoes

3) Cilantro

4) Garlic

5) Blueberries and other anti-oxidant rich fruits

Power Play:  The Sweet Potato Scramble

This recipe combines several of the macro-nutrients listed above into one delectable dish that is perfect for breakfast or lunch.  You will need:  1 sweet potato, 3 whole eggs, cilantro, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, 1 cup blueberries, and low fat vanilla yogurt.

Preparation

To begin, prepare the following ingredients:

1) Clean sweet potato.  Place on side and slice in to circular discs about ¼ inch wide.

2) Place 1 whole egg into a mixing bowl and add 2 egg whites.  Mix well.

3) Wash blueberries and set aside in separate serving bowl.

4) Crush 2 cloves of garlic, slicing into smaller pieces if necessary.  Note:  Using a garlic press to crush cloves into a paste is preferable.

5) Set aside ¼ cup cilantro.  Dice thoroughly.

Cooking Instructions

1) Add 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil to frying pan.  Raise stove top burner to low to medium-low heat.

2) Add crushed garlic.  Increase heat slightly to sauté garlic.

3) Add sweet potato discs to garlic and olive oil.  Sauté until tender.

4) Sprinkle with diced cilantro.  Mix thoroughly.

5) Add egg mixture.  Fluff with spatula.

6) Season lightly with salt and black pepper, as desired.

7) Serve sweet potato scramble as main dish.  Serve blueberries with low fat vanilla yogurt as dessert.

Breakdown:  Health Benefits of the Sweet Potato Scramble

This hearty breakfast will fill you up and keep you full well into lunchtime.  This means fewer high-sugar “snack” bars, prolonged energy, and a more stable blood sugar index.

Egg Whites: Egg whites are one of the leanest sources of protein you can find.  Their makeup is dominantly casein, a special type of protein that is digested more slowly compared to the protein found in chicken, meat, fish, and soy.  This means a more slow and steady deliver of nutrients that will keep you feeling fuller, longer.

Sweet Potatoes: Miami dentists are usually against sweets.  Well, here’s an important exception!  A 7-ounce sweet potato delivers 65% the daily recommended dose of vitamin C, as well as hefty servings of Beta-carotene, Vitamin A, and fiber (i).

Olive Oil & Egg Yolk (from single whole egg): Combined, these two ingredients deliver a healthy portion of unsaturated fat.  Unsaturated fat is a fundamental building block of health, with leading research indicating that unsaturated fat can greatly reduce levels of “bad” cholesterol.

Cilantro: This simple herb helps to flush toxins from the body.  For more information, please visit our article titled Hello Cilantro, Goodbye Heavy Metals (article also features a delicious recipe for Cilantro Pesto Sauce!).

Blueberries: Blueberries are high in the antioxidants and natural sugars needed to promote spikes all-natural energy production.  Readers are encouraged to visit our article, Miami Dentist Exclusive:  Free Radical Damage Part II, for more on the health benefits of antioxidants and a list of the most antioxidant-rich foods available at your local grocery store.

Moms, Dads, Teenagers, and Invisalign

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Moms, Dads, Teenagers, and InvisalignMiami Invisalign treatments skyrocketed in recent months as South Florida residents are beginning to see the value in clear orthodontic treatments.  Hailed by many as the “Invisible Braces” system that has created over 1 million smiles and counting, Invisalign is quickly replacing traditional metal braces as the standard in orthodontic smile enhancement.

Invisalign has grown in popularity among children and adults of all ages because it delivers a range of benefits that are not available through traditional metal braces treatments.  To illustrate, consider that metal braces require brackets and metal wiring to be permanently affixed to the teeth of the patient for the duration of the procedure.  This greatly complicates the task of brushing and flossing to remove food particles from the teeth, which leads to the buildup of plaque and the formation of tooth decay.  Moreover, many individuals find metal brackets and wiring to be unsightly, making patients with traditional braces feel embarrassed or ashamed with their orthodontic devices.

Invisalign excels where metal braces fall short.  Invisalign ailigners are completely removable which allows patients to eat, brush, and floss as if they were not wearing braces at all.  Patients can more easily care for their teeth and gums as well, which decreases the rate at which Invisalign patients experience tooth decay and gum disease.

Best of all, Invisalign is clear and nearly invisible when worn!  This is perhaps the greatest advantage of all.  Patients love wearing an orthodontic device that is discrete yet effective, and they enjoy being able to create a beautiful smile without the embarrassment of metal brackets and wiring.

Mercury in Teeth: Is Amalgam Poisoning You?

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Mercury in Teeth: Is Amalgam Poisoning You?Mercury amalgams are known to most Americans as “silver fillings.”   An “amalgam” is a metallic mixture that is still used in many traditional dental procedures.  Alarmingly, these dental amalgams may have a mercury content of 50-60% or more.

As a Miami dentist and holistic health professional, Dr. Ted Herrmann cannot understate his opposition to mercury fillings.  “Dental patients need to know that no amount of mercury is safe,” Dr. Herrmann states.  In fact, the World Health Organization identified dental amalgam as “the greatest source of mercury exposure for the general population,” in 1991 (i).

The subject of mercury in dental amalgams has garnered national attention as the U.S. State Department announced its official stance on the use of this controversial substance last Monday, October 24th.

Mercury in Amalgam:  Why Is No One Talking About This?

An estimated 122 million Americans have mercury amalgams in their teeth, according to the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT).  Unfortunately, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and American Dental Association (ADA) have yet to formally announce any dangers regarding the use of mercury in dental fillings.

“The general public doesn’t know because the government hasn’t informed them or given them warning,” explains consumer advocate Freya Koss (ii).  Ms. Koss was diagnosed with a number of serious illnesses, including Multiple Sclerosis and Lupus, shortly after receiving a silver mercury filling.  Ms. Koss reported to Fox News that she became “spontaneously better” after having a safe mercury removal procedure to remove the mercury filling.

So, why is one of the most toxic and dangerous chemicals known to humankind used in routine dental procedures?  According to Ms. Koss and a number of other health professionals, the problem is that the Federal government has never taken a formal “stance” on the issue.  The tide is slowly changing, however.

Part I:  IAOMT Asks FDA to Ban Mercury Amalgams

In late December 2010, the IAOMT rallied several health professionals to formerly request that the FDA ban the use of mercury amalgam in dental procedures.  The IAOMT has made the full petition available here for download.  A few main points include the following:

1.  Formerly ban the use of mercury amalgam fillings as a restorative dental material.

2.  Restrict the use of mercury amalgams until strict proof illustrates that the material is both safe and effective.

3. In the interim, the FDA must restrict the use of mercury amalgam in women, young children, and other individuals with compromised kidney, immune, or neurological function.

In other words, the IAOMT requested that the FDA either ban or heavily restrict the use of mercury amalgams until “strict proof” can indicate that they are both safe and effective.

Part II:  U.S. State Department Announces Mercury Amalgam “Phase Down”

Last Monday, nearly a full year after the IAOMT petitioned the FDA, the U.S. State Department held a closed-doors meeting on Capitol Hill to reconsider the use of mercury amalgams.

After the meeting, the Department of State announced their decision to “phase down” the use of mercury amalgam fillings in dental procedures.  Unfortunately, the “phasing down” of this toxic material is not expected to begin until the year 2020.
