Perio Protect and Gum Disease

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

miami-dentist-perio-protect-gum-diseaseProper gum care starts at an early age.  Eating well, brushing, and flossing are all habits we’re smart to learn at a young age.  Sometimes, though, poor hygiene gets the better of us.  After some time, the accumulation of plaque can breed gum disease.  Have you noticed sharp pains in your gums?  This could be a sign that you need to see a Miami dentist soon.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Our Valentine’s Invisalign Special is already generating buzz, but we nonetheless must turn our attention to a growing concern for many adults:  gum disease.  This disease affects a large population of Americans, leading to severely infected gums and tooth loss.  Moreover, a growing body of research links this disease with other serious health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory disease (i).

A Gum Disease Overview

Health professionals often refer to gum disease as periodontal disease.  This disease is bacterial, resulting from negligent tooth and gum care.  Most commonly, food particles that are left untouched form plaque between the teeth and along the gum line.  Once this plaque forms, swarms of bacteria breed, feeding on the plaque to grow and reproduce.  These bacteria do not stay on the surface, however.  They dive into the gums, affecting the roots of the teeth, spreading to the jawbone if left untreated.  Once bacteria forms and begins to infect the gums, patients may experience:

  1. Swelling of the gums, at or around the site of the infection.
  2. Bleeding of the gums around the gum line, usually noticeable when brushing.
  3. Sharp sensations of pain in the gums surrounding the affected area.
  4. Receding gums.
  5. An uncomfortable bite, signaling that teeth have separated from on another due to gum loss.

Perio Protect Treatment

Perio Protect is a system developed specifically to combat gum disease.  Over time, Perio Protect has the ability to reverse the signs of gum disease.  Depending on the severity of the condition, proper use of the Perio Protect system may fully restore gums to their natural condition.  Proper use of the system happens in two phases.

Phase one consists of a deep cleaning to remove existing plaque and tarter from the enamel of the tooth at the gum line.  The scope of a deep cleaning is much greater than that of a normal dental cleaning and is typically more time consuming.  It is well worth the time, however.  A deep cleaning has the potential to remove most of the plaque that accumulates and leads to gum disease.

Phase two marks the beginning of the Perio Protect portion of the treatment.  Your Miami dental professional will take impressions of your teeth and create a pair of custom mouth trays to fit securely around the teeth of your upper and lower jaw.  Once these trays are created, your dentist will prescribe a solution of antibacterial oxidants specifically formulated to combat your periodontal infection.  Clinical research indicates that the oxidative chemical structure of the Perio Protect prescription solution significantly reduces the biofilm on teeth (ii).

Holistic Health Management

Friday, January 14th, 2011

miami-dentist-holistic-health-managementHolistic dentists and alternative health professionals have a common ground:  each sees the big picture.  Holistic health practitioners see the human body as one giant puzzle.  When disassembled, the puzzle is merely a pile of random pieces.  When assembled, however, the puzzle creates a picture that is in itself greater than any one piece.  In this way, holistic dentists and other alternative health professionals pay particular attention to patients’ mental, physical, and social needs, recognizing that each contributes to overall health.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Holistic health is all about the big picture.  It asserts that human beings have certain needs, and these needs must be addressed with physical, mental, and social dimensions in mind.

Consider:  If you wake up in the morning with a bad head cold, can you be absolutely certain that it is because of a physical ailment?  Modern medicine has shown time and time again that sickness, like the common cold, can be caused by stress.  Individuals with high stress levels show signs of weak immune systems, making them particularly vulnerable to sickness.  Stress is the mental piece of the equation; sickness is the physical manifestation.  In other words, certain mental conditions may cause physical things to happen.

Holistic Dentistry

Holistic dentistry varies from traditional dentistry in the attention it pays to patients’ mental and social needs, in addition to the physical.  Traditional dentistry, on the other hand, focuses on the patients’ physical needs only.  For example:  a patient with a cavity needs a filling.  Traditional dentistry stops here, reacting to the physical problem only.

Holistic dental practices focus on the comprehensive big picture.  To illustrate, consider the same aforementioned patient with a cavity.  Holistic dentists will absolutely note a physical need—the patient needs a filling.  They go further, however, and dig into why the patient needs a filling.  Why has this patient developed plaque that has been untouched for so long that it had a chance to eat away at the enamel of their tooth?  More often than not, these questions are answered through the assessment of the patient’s mental and social needs.

Poor Oral Hygiene and Stress

One reason for poor oral hygiene may be stress.  To illustrate, consider that individuals with high stress levels seek various different comforts to alleviate that stress.  This can lead to excessive sugar intake, going to sleep without brushing and flossing, teeth grinding, and jaw clenching.  These things slowly break down tooth enamel, making teeth more susceptible to cavities.  Stress is just one example of a mental state that can alter a physical state.  Anxiety, paranoia, fear, and different emotions can likewise affect the physical being of a person.

To care for your oral health in the best way possible, consider visiting a holistic dental professional.  Holistic dental experiences are more comprehensive than traditional ones.  Cleanings at Assure a Smile, for example, provide a thorough insight into your specific oral conditions, including jaw bone density, mouth acidity, and more.  If you are interested in a more inclusive and insightful visit to the dentist, take advantage of our New Patient Cleaning Special and schedule a dental appointment online!

4 Ways to Prevent Gum Disease

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

miami-dentist-4-ways-prevent-gum-diseaseSuffering with bleeding, puffy, or agitated gums is not normal.  In fact, these are 3 telltale signs of periodontal disease.  Known most commonly as gum disease, this condition causes chronic bad breath, a receding gum line, and eventually loss of teeth.  Take steps now, and you may be able to reverse this terrible condition under the supervision of a local dentist in Miami.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Gum disease is more common than you may think.  Alarmingly, this horrific condition affects nearly 85% of all Americans.  Signs of gums disease include puffy, bleeding, and agitated gums.  Agitation is most common after consuming food, when tiny particles are wedged between the molars of the upper and lower jaw.  Individuals may also notice blood in their saliva when brushing their teeth in the morning or at night.  Should you encounter any of these signs of infection, consult a Miami dentist immediately.  Additionally, consider the following 5 precautions in safeguarding against gum disease:

1) Brush and Floss Nightly—it takes only 48 hours for bacteria to infect the gums.  If you go to sleep with food particles in the nooks and crevices in your teeth, you give bacteria a winning chance of festering and infecting your gums.

2) Schedule regular dental cleanings—adults should schedule a dental cleaning about ever 4 months, and children every 6.  By visiting a dental professional regularly, you are able to stay on top of the development and removal of plaque from your teeth.

3) Choose Invisalign if you are getting braces—traditional metal braces have wires and brackets that are permanently cemented to the facades of the teeth.  This hardware can be difficult to clean, and may lead to increased bacteria and plaque cultivation.  When choosing braces, opt for a removable solution like Invisalign clear braces. Patients who use removable braces like Invisalign are better able to keep their teeth and gums clean.

4) Treat Problem Areas with Perio Protect—infected areas may be treated with medicated solutions like Perio Protect.  This system includes two custom made trays to fit the patient’s teeth and treat the gum line with prescription strength medication to slow and combat developing gum disease.

Gum disease is one of the most common and harmful oral infections among Americans.  When left untreated, gum disease can cause loss of teeth and has recently been linked with heart disease.  Should you experience signs of gum disease, particularly bloody saliva, consult a dentist in Miami immediately.  The Perio Protect system is just one effective means of treatment that is available through your local dental professional.

A Miami Dental Concern: Cookies and Cavities

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

miami-dental-concerns-cookies-cavities

The only thing worse than receding holiday cheer is discovering you have a cavity in February!  It is not as uncommon as you may think.  The holidays bring family, friends, and sweet treats together for days on end.  High spirits overshadow daily routine, and you may find yourself taking a nap with a mouth full of cookies!  Take a moment to review the basics with Assure a Smile, and make a cavity free start in 2011.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

There are many reasons to let your oral hygiene suffer during the holidays.  Whether you are traveling, napping  after dinner, or overwhelmed with activities, finding a moment to care for your teeth and gums may seem impossible.  So, keep it simple!  Follow these 3 basic guidelines and help your teeth and gums stay healthy this winter.

Opt for Healthy Cookies

More than likely, you will not make it through the holidays without indulging your sweet tooth.  This is fine, but should be done with tact.  Choosing a healthy alternative to sweets is tough, especially when you are the guest.  When attending a dinner party, save the cookies and other desserts for after dinner.  This will ensure you eat only a couple, instead of ravenously devouring a village of helpless gingerbread men.

When hosting, remember that not everyone enjoys healthy sweets.  Prepare plenty of options using both traditional recipes and low sugar alternatives.  To illustrate, consider making a dozen or so sugar cookies with frosting and sprinkles.  Recreate that same recipe, but substitute applesauce for the sugar.  Lightly top them with non-fat vanilla yogurt, and enjoy!

Brush and Floss Regularly

It is all about the basics, especially when it comes to cavity prevention.  Brushing and flossing is the best way to remove the plaque from your teeth and protect from infection.  Flossing is particularly important; it takes only 48 hours for the food particles between your teeth to infect your gums.  Skip your nightly regiment twice in a row, and you may be in trouble.

Schedule a Dental Appointment for 2011

Start the new year with a dental appointment to make sure all is in order.  This should include a thorough dental cleaning, x-rays, and inspection by a licensed DMD.  Holistic dentistry practices may also include a TMJ scan, additional digital photographs, and additional dental education to arm you with the knowledge necessary to prevent future problems.

Don’t let your oral health suffer in the midst of this holiday season!  Be mindful of sugar intake, brush and floss as normal, and schedule a dental appointment with a local Miami dentist to make sure 2011 gets off to a good start!

Holistic Holiday Wellness with 5 Power Foods

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

miami-dentist-holistic-holiday-wellness

Are you eating enough power foods?  If you are feeling tired, sick, or unusually stressed, that answer may be no!  Eating power foods is easy, effective in boosting immunity to colds, and downright delicious!  Take a moment to review these power food recommendations from your local Miami dentist.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Staying healthy through the winter is usually lost in the midst of holiday planning, gift giving, and travel.  Nevertheless, the combination of cold weather, natural stress, and poor diet makes this time of year ripe with infection.  This season, take a holistic approach to the holidays.  Anticipate getting run down before it happens, and safeguard against sickness by incorporating these 5 power foods in your diet!

Garlic

Yes, it makes your breath smell.  But this cooking-essential is packed with antioxidants to help your body fight the free radicals that lead to sickness.  Garlic is a natural anti-inflammatory, as well.

Suggested Use:  Chop garlic and sauté over medium heat in coconut oil.  Add onion, cooking until onion becomes clear.  Next, add broccoli, carrots, snap peas, or your favorite vegetables.  Cook until vegetables become tender.  And Voila!  This garlic vegetable medley goes well with chicken, beef, and pork entrees.

Broccoli

These tiny tree-like vegetables are a triple threat.  Loaded with naturally occurring vitamin A, C, and glutathione (a high powered antioxidant), broccoli is an absolute must this Holiday Season.

Suggested Use:  Sautee broccoli in garlic and coconut oil (see above).  Add egg whites, scrambling until all contents are cooked thoroughly.  The result:  a broccoli omelet with enough vitamins and antioxidants to power through the toughest December morning.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are more than just a great energy source.  These guys contain high concentrations of vitamin A and beta carotene, an antioxidant known for disarming malicious free radicals.

Suggested Use:  Rinse potato well in water.  Slice into thin circular disks.  Sautee in garlic and coconut oil (see above).  Serve as is, or combine with egg whites, peppers, and onion for a hearty potatoe-scramble.

Acai Berries

It’s hard to visit the grocery store without finding 101 different acai juices, nutrition bars, pills, or powders.  Acai berries are more than just a fad, however, containing overwhelming amounts of antioxidants per serving.  Opt for the whole berries, whenever possible.  This will give you the added benefit of consuming the berry’s skin and pulp, which is naturally rich in fiber.  If you cannot find whole berries, choose a quality Acai juice.

Suggested Use:  Consume 1 cup of whole berries, or a single 8 oz glass of juice, with breakfast and dinner.

Mushrooms

We saved the best for last.  Mushrooms are a necessity when it comes to building a strong immune system because they naturally have high amounts of B vitamins, niacin, and riboflavin.  Moreover, the selenium in mushrooms helps the immune system fight off viruses and bacteria.

Suggested Use:  Sautee mushrooms in garlic and coconut oil (see above).  Add your favorite vegetables, and serve over brown rice.

Don’t let the hectic Holiday Season get you run down.  Simple additions to your daily diet can fuel your body with the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants necessary to ward off infection and keep you healthy.  Happy Holidays, from this Miami dentist and Assure a Smile team!

Miami Invisalign Special Ending Soon!

Friday, December 17th, 2010

miami-dentist-invisalign-special-ending-soonInvisalign Invisible Braces have created over 1 million beautiful smiles worldwide.  The revolutionary straightening system gently repositions teeth with clear aligners, virtually eliminating the embarrassment and discomfort typically associated with braces!  For a limited time, this treatment plan is available through the Miami Invisalign professionals at Assure a Smile for $1,000 off!  Interested patients must hurry, though, because this offer ends when the new year begins.*

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

As a Miami dentist I see many patients concerned with the appearance of their smile.  Miami is not the only place harboring smile-insecurity; an estimated 76% of Americans are embarrassed to flash their teeth (i).  This is alarming, because an estimated 78% of Americans also believe that smiling regularly improves physiological health!  In fact, Mark Stibich, PhD and consultant to Columbia University, asserts that slowing your breathing and forcing a smile may reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and curb anxiety (ii).

At the very least, we know that smiling makes the individuals around us happy.  This is reason enough for Assure a Smile to offer an Invisalign braces promotion; from now until January 1st, 2011 patients will receive $1,000 off!  Now is the perfect opportunity for Miami residents to create the smile of their dreams with Invisalign.

Miami Invisalign:  Creating Healthy Smiles

Contacting a Miami Invisalign provider is the quickest way for Miami residents to begin treatment with a local professional.  From widely spaced teeth to overbites and crossbites, Invisaligncreates smiles that breed confidence and long term health benefits:

  1. Health Benefits:  Individuals with straight teeth are more likely to smile frequently, leading to lower levels of stress, blood pressure, and anxiety.
  2. Removable Braces Promote Good Oral Hygiene:  Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligners are removable.  Patients are free to remove the aligners each time they brush and floss their teeth.  No special tools are needed, and no additional time is required.
  3. Straight Teeth Are Easier To Clean:  Using Invisalign has more than just aesthetic benefits.  Straighter teeth are easier to clean and maintain.  This means less plaque, fewer cavities, and better overall health.

At Assure a Smile, we work diligently to reverse many of the preconceived ideas patients may have about dentistry.  When it comes to braces, we encourage our patients to consider Invisalign clear braces, especially if they are under the impression that braces are painful, embarrassing, or otherwise bothersome.  Invisalign is a comfortable, discrete, and effective solution.  With the New Year approaching, there has never been a better time to take a confident smile towards a straighter, healthier smile!

*Official ending of $1,000 off Invisalign Invisible Braces Promotion is January 1st, 2011.

Miami Dentist Urges Patients to Think Holistic

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

miami-dentist-urges-patients-to-think-holisticIt’s that time of year!  Jingle bells, gingerbread cookies, and the turning of another calendar year are on the horizon.  As we reflect on the passing year, let us look towards the next with enthusiasm, hope, and dedication to better health.  When it comes to pursuing better oral health, Assure a Smile would like to take a moment and urge patients to think Holistic.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

What better time to reflect on personal health and well being than right before the start of a new year?  Whether you have a dozen cavities or zero, it is important to consistently reevaluate the way you think of your teeth, gums, and local dentist.  Take a moment to familiarize yourself with holistic dentistry, a proactive approach to creating healthy smiles that last a lifetime.

Diet and Holistic Dentistry

Holistic dentistry seeks out the causal factors that contribute to dental conditions.  One of the most common contributing factors to poor oral hygiene is a corresponding poor diet.  Holistic dentistry differs from traditional dentistry in the belief that simple dietary changes can help create healthy teeth and gums for life.  For example, traditional dentistry’s answer to fighting cavities and gum disease is to brush and floss regularly.  This approach is reactive, focusing on plaque removal instead of the plaque itself.  Holistic dentists, by contrast, want to help patients prevent tooth decay not only through proper hygiene, but also through proper diet.

When armed with the proper knowledge, patients can make minor adjustments to their diet to help prevent plaque accumulation before it starts.  Limiting sugar intake, for example, is one of the best ways to prevent plaque from accumulating on your teeth.

Proactive Teeth and Gum Care

Of course, proactive teeth and gum care is an essential part of long lasting oral health.  Making dietary changes will help to limit the damage caused by eating food, however regular brushing and flossing is still required to remove the food particles that cause disease.

It is important to consider flossing a major component of oral hygiene.  Though tedious, flossing removes the food particles that become lodged deep between teeth and near the gums.  If not removed regularly, these food particles can infect the gums in as little as 48 hours.  Once infection occurs, gums may become swollen, painful, and bleeding, eventually leading to gum disease.

Miami Dental Checkups and Cleanings

Regular dental checkups and cleanings round out the holistic approach to dentistry.  Even the most educated and proactive patients develop occasional problem areas, and it is nothing to be ashamed of.  However, minor problems become major problems when left undiagnosed and treated.  Scheduling an appointment with a local Miami dentist will ensure your oral health plan gets off on the right foot for 2011.

Waterlase Dentistry Miami: Comfortable, Convenient, Precise

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

miami-dentist-waterlase-dentistryWhen we think of dental procedures, what typically comes to mind?  If you’re like most people, you think of drilling, jaw-shaking vibrations, and uncomfortable heat.  And you cringe.  However, times have changed.  Dentists in Miami, and professionals nationwide, are now employing exciting new technologies that provide the very same dental procedures with added comfort, convenience, and precision.  And patients couldn’t be happier.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

The laser has revolutionized medical procedures, offering a solution for most anything from tattoo removal to vision correction.  Dentistry has likewise benefited since the advent of the laser.  Waterlase Dentistry, for example, is a favorite among dental professionals when it comes to new technology.  Waterlase combines the gentle sensation of water with the precision of laser technology to deliver a means of plaque removal that most patients will find extremely comfortable.

Waterlase Dentistry has patients smiling for many reasons, including:

  1. Waterlase uses a combination of water bursts and a laser to perform many dental procedures, instead of high pressure drilling.
  2. Waterlase is minimally invasive, removing tooth decay without excessive pressure and heat.
  3. Because plaque is removed without excessive drilling, more of the tooth structure is left in tact, promoting superior oral health and longevity.
  4. Because Waterlase is gentle, patients require less anesthetic.  This means fewer needles, and fewer post-op numb lips.
  5. Waterlase technology has a wide range of applications including the removal of tooth enamel decay, bone, and gum tissue.

Comfortable, convenient, and precise, Waterlase technology has expanded the ability of Miami dentists to treat their patients.  Patients now receive comfortable and precise treatments from their family dentist, instead of being referred to another professional with whom they are unfamiliar.  Assure a Smile excitedly offers Waterlase Dentistry and we encourage patients to contact one of our professional for more information on available procedures.

Minimally Invasive Dentistry with the Diagnodent Laser

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

miami-dentist-diagnodent-laser-dentistryMinimally invasive technology is exciting for both medical professionals as well as the patients they treat.  These new technologies allow professionals to conduct traditional procedures, often times with more precision and less pain.  When searching for a Miami dental provider, you may wish to find a professional who uses minimally invasive technologies so your visit is as painless and comfortable as possible.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

We take pride in providing the highest quality of service at Assure a Smile.  Ensuring our patients receive the latest in holistic dental and minimally invasive treatments is our top priority.  Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Diagnodent Laser, one of our leading minimally invasive treatment options.

Miami Dentistry and the Diagnodent Laser

How does the Diagnodent Laser work?

In a lot of ways, the Diagnodent Laser works like a radar, detecting bacteria cultures and plaque accumulation on the enamel of the teeth.  The laser is shown on the surface of the tooth and is reflected back towards the instrument when it encounters even the slightest areas of decay, identifying the problem areas.

How does the Diagnodent Laser compare to X-rays and other cavity?

This method is far superior to X-rays and manual exploration because the Diagnodent’s fluorescent laser detects areas of plaque and bacteria that are nestled deep within the tiny cracks and valleys of a tooth, known as hidden carries.  As the name suggests, these areas of decay are hard to detect because they are nearly invisible to both the naked eye and X-rays.

Should I be concerned with hidden caries?

Yes, hidden caries may be extremely detrimental to long term oral health.  Because they are hidden, they can grow undetected and eventually penetrate into the soft tissue of the tooth before they can be identified and properly treated.  This sets into motion a high level of tooth decay that may result in major cavities, root canals, and ultimately gum infection.

The Diagnodent Laser is just one of the leading technologies we offer to our patients.  This laser treatment has many benefits and is virtually pain-free, making it an ideal choice for young children and patients with dental anxiety.  We encourage you to contact Assure a Smile for more information on Diagnodent Laser treatment sessions.

Why See a Holistic Dentist?

Friday, November 5th, 2010

why-see-a-holistic-miami-dentist

Holistic dentistry seems to be just another part the go green fad that’s been building momentum over the last decade.  Many mistakenly categorize the idea of holistic health with the likes of organic veggies, overpriced antioxidant super drinks, and trendy yoga studios.  However, holistic dentistry is not a mere fad.  Holistic ideals predate the advent of modern medicine, illustrating a timeless concern for the interconnected nature of the human body.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Assure a Smile Miami Dentistry was built upon the idea that information is power.  The more a patient knows, the more he or she can take proactive steps towards keeping their teeth and gums healthy for life.  Much of this ideology stems from the principles of holistic medicine.  Holistic medicine, and in our case holistic dentistry, views the body as a complex but unified system.  If there is a problem with one piece, that problem may manifest itself through another piece.

To illustrate, consider a patient who has very good oral hygiene but a few minor fillings.  Despite their regular brushing and flossing, the patient continues to develop minor cavities that need correcting.  There are two ways dentistry may approach this problem:

Traditional Dentistry

Traditional dentistry tends to be reactive.  When a patient has a cavity, the plaque is drilled away from the enamel of the tooth and the cavity is filled.  The patient is given brief instruction on proper brushing and flossing techniques, but much of this is already known.  Further, the patient leaves with little additional knowledge to help protect themselves from future cavities.

Holistic Dentistry

Holistic dentistry looks at the very same patient and asks why.  What is the big picture?  Why does this person—who takes relatively good care of their teeth—continuing to develop cavities?  Assure a Smile thinks of this approach as people dentistry, and we help patients identify the causal factors that contribute to their oral health problems.  The patient described above may habitually grind their teeth, slowly weakening their tooth enamel over time.  The pH balance in their mouth may be naturally acidic, and they may benefit from avoiding drinks like orange and grapefruit juices.  There may be several underlying factors that contribute to a patient’s oral problems—and holistic dentistry aims to identify, explain, and diffuse each one individually.

Much like holistic dentistry, Assure a Smile gives each patient the undivided attention necessary to uncover the causes of their dental ailments.  Once the root of the problem is identified, the patient can learn how to prevent future problems and avoid long hours in the dental chair.
