Perio Protect and Gum Disease

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

miami-dentist-perio-protect-gum-diseaseProper gum care starts at an early age.  Eating well, brushing, and flossing are all habits we’re smart to learn at a young age.  Sometimes, though, poor hygiene gets the better of us.  After some time, the accumulation of plaque can breed gum disease.  Have you noticed sharp pains in your gums?  This could be a sign that you need to see a Miami dentist soon.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Our Valentine’s Invisalign Special is already generating buzz, but we nonetheless must turn our attention to a growing concern for many adults:  gum disease.  This disease affects a large population of Americans, leading to severely infected gums and tooth loss.  Moreover, a growing body of research links this disease with other serious health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory disease (i).

A Gum Disease Overview

Health professionals often refer to gum disease as periodontal disease.  This disease is bacterial, resulting from negligent tooth and gum care.  Most commonly, food particles that are left untouched form plaque between the teeth and along the gum line.  Once this plaque forms, swarms of bacteria breed, feeding on the plaque to grow and reproduce.  These bacteria do not stay on the surface, however.  They dive into the gums, affecting the roots of the teeth, spreading to the jawbone if left untreated.  Once bacteria forms and begins to infect the gums, patients may experience:

  1. Swelling of the gums, at or around the site of the infection.
  2. Bleeding of the gums around the gum line, usually noticeable when brushing.
  3. Sharp sensations of pain in the gums surrounding the affected area.
  4. Receding gums.
  5. An uncomfortable bite, signaling that teeth have separated from on another due to gum loss.

Perio Protect Treatment

Perio Protect is a system developed specifically to combat gum disease.  Over time, Perio Protect has the ability to reverse the signs of gum disease.  Depending on the severity of the condition, proper use of the Perio Protect system may fully restore gums to their natural condition.  Proper use of the system happens in two phases.

Phase one consists of a deep cleaning to remove existing plaque and tarter from the enamel of the tooth at the gum line.  The scope of a deep cleaning is much greater than that of a normal dental cleaning and is typically more time consuming.  It is well worth the time, however.  A deep cleaning has the potential to remove most of the plaque that accumulates and leads to gum disease.

Phase two marks the beginning of the Perio Protect portion of the treatment.  Your Miami dental professional will take impressions of your teeth and create a pair of custom mouth trays to fit securely around the teeth of your upper and lower jaw.  Once these trays are created, your dentist will prescribe a solution of antibacterial oxidants specifically formulated to combat your periodontal infection.  Clinical research indicates that the oxidative chemical structure of the Perio Protect prescription solution significantly reduces the biofilm on teeth (ii).

Our 2010 Miami Invisalign Special was a great success!  We are proud to welcome so many new patients to our practice, and we know you will enjoy your new smiles!  2010 may have ended, but our commitment to creating healthy and beautiful teeth is still alive.  Starting February 1st, new Invisalign patients will receive a special promotion:

A jaw dropping, pure white smile is more affordable than ever this year, and just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Invisalign vs. Metal Braces

Many are hesitant to try Invisalign over traditional metal braces.  New technology usually causes apprehension; it is normal to hesitate.  After all, clear plastic aligners seem ineffective compared to heavy duty metal and wiring.  However, the company proudly boasts the creation of over a million smiles since its founding.  And it is easy to see why Invisalign is so popular.  The clear braces system offers many comforts that you simply do not receive when being treated with metal braces.  These include comfort, cleanliness, and effectiveness:

Comfort

Invisalign aligners are made of smooth, clear polyurethane plastic.  These durable mouth pieces are safe to place in your mouth and, best of all, they do not agitate the insides of your cheeks and gums.

Cleanliness

Invisalign aligners are removable, so you can brush and floss normally!  Simply remove the aligners in the morning, during the afternoon (if you brush in the afternoon), and in the evening to clean your teeth as usual.  The removable nature of Invisalign allows patients to completely clean the hard-to-reach areas of the teeth and gums with ease, decreasing the likelihood of developing excessive plaque and tooth decay during treatment.

Effectiveness

Many dentists, including myself, have seen patients achieve dramatic results with Invisalign.  For an additional professional opinion, we turn to Michael Ayzin, DDS.  Dr. Ayzin, a cosmetic dental professional operating in Orange County, California, reports that each patient he has treated with Invisalign has been “completely happy with their results,” (i).  Dr. Ayzin and myself are not alone.  Thousands of professionals  have helped patients nationwide to achieve the smile of their dreams with Invisalign.

Miami Dentistry News: Government Recommends Less Fluoride

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

miami-dentist-news-government-recommends-less-fluorideIt’s nearly everywhere:  in our water, mouth rinses, and now toothpastes.  Fluoride has been the go-to chemical for cavity prevention for over 50 years.  Now, however, the Center for Disease Control warns that the chemical may be too prevalent.  Too much fluoride may lead to serious oral health problems including hidden caries and fluorosis.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Miami dentists have warned patients of fluoride overload.  Our Miami Dentist Blog wrote of this issue in late November.  The article is titled Warning:  Too Much Fluoride and it serves as a good information source for further details on the effects of excessive fluoride intake.

The warnings have gone national; this weekend’s installment of the Wall Street Weekend Journal features an article on the harmful effects of excessive fluoride.  The Federal government now warns Americans that the mineral may cause fluorosis in young children, a condition whereby the enamel of the teeth becomes streaked with off-white discoloration.  This news is in light of a recent Center for Disease Control study conducted between 1999 and 2004.  The study found that a whopping 41% of children ages 12-15 exhibit signs of dental fluorosis.  This rate has nearly doubled since 1986, when levels were only about 23%.

Miami Dentistry Fluorosis FAQ

The Miami dentists at Assure a Smile have created the following Frequently Asked Questions guide to assist parents in learning more about fluorosis prevention:

What is fluorosis?

Fluorosis is a discoloration of tooth enamel.

What causes fluorosis?

Fluorosis is caused by excessive ingestion of the mineral fluoride.  The mineral is most readily available in unfiltered tap water, however, is becoming widely applied to a variety of dental products.

When is my child most at risk?

Children are most at risk around age 8.  This is a critical moment in the child’s life, as the permanent teeth are developing below the gums.

Am I at risk?

Survey your smile.  Those at risk of excessive fluoride intake will notice that their teeth have developed vertical, off-white colored streaks.  Also consider the frequency with which you use or consume the following:  tap water, fluoride supplements, fluoride mouth rinse, and fluoride enriched toothpaste.

What may I do to prevent fluorosis?

Limit your intake of fluoride.  Consider purchasing a water filtration device to remove the fluoride from your tap water.  Also, avoid toothpastes, supplements, and mouth rinses rich in fluoride.

Holistic dentists have been aware of the potential for fluoride overload for some time.  If you are searching for a dentist in Miami, you may wish to find a professional who takes the holistic approach to dentistry.

A Miami Dentist Recap: Healthiest Foods 2010

Friday, December 31st, 2010

miami-dentist-recap-healthiest-foods-2010Dentists in Miami are very concerned with the foods their patients eat.  For holistic dentists, food takes on even greater importance.  As the old adage tells us:  you get what you put in.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Eating well balanced, nutrient packed meals pays benefits well beyond merely satisfying your hunger.  When you eat well, you feel well.  As 2010 draws to a close, let’s take a moment and reflect on the healthiest foods of the past year.  Some may look familiar, but take a closer look and you will find that the past year saw an increase in exotic foods that lead to better health.

  1. Salmon—salmon is a great source of both protein and healthy fats.  This heart-healthy food is recommended by the American Heart Association because it is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.
  2. Soy—vegetarian, vegan, or plain meat-eater, soy is derived from soy beans and packed with nutrients like zinc, omega 3s, magnesium, and B vitamins.
  3. Green Vegetables—broccoli is the MVP of this food group, toting vitamins A and C, iron, calcium, and fiber.
  4. Acia Berries—2010 saw a surge in this exotic fruit, and it’s no secret why.  Acia berries are loaded with antioxidants (over 2x that of blueberries).  Antioxidants nutralize free radicals in the body, preventing cellular damage and leading to overall better health.
  5. Whole Grains—consume the recommended 4-5 servings of this food group each day and you’ll get an army of complex “good” carbohydrates, as well as vitamin B, E, magnesium, iron, and fiber.

Increasing the frequency with which you consume the above foods will better your overall health in several ways.  First, each of these foods contains a substantial amount of high quality calories, with the exception of green vegetables.  It is important to ingest plenty of calories throughout the day to minimize those late-night hunger pains that usually lead to sugary snacks.  Second, each of the above foods is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, or omega 3 fatty acids.  These nutrients are essential in promoting longevity and vitality, helping your body to stay healthy.  Omega 3s, in particular, have the added benefit of lowering LDL, or bad cholesterol.

While seemingly out of place on the Miami Dentist Blog, nutrition information is nevertheless a cornerstone of dental educationHolistic dentistry takes the approach that dental problems may actually be manifestations of other deeply rooted problems.  Often times, these problems stem from poor nutrition.  By taking the holistic approach and identifying causal factors, holistic dentists are better able to educate patients and ensure the problem does not persist.

4 Ways to Prevent Gum Disease

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

miami-dentist-4-ways-prevent-gum-diseaseSuffering with bleeding, puffy, or agitated gums is not normal.  In fact, these are 3 telltale signs of periodontal disease.  Known most commonly as gum disease, this condition causes chronic bad breath, a receding gum line, and eventually loss of teeth.  Take steps now, and you may be able to reverse this terrible condition under the supervision of a local dentist in Miami.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Gum disease is more common than you may think.  Alarmingly, this horrific condition affects nearly 85% of all Americans.  Signs of gums disease include puffy, bleeding, and agitated gums.  Agitation is most common after consuming food, when tiny particles are wedged between the molars of the upper and lower jaw.  Individuals may also notice blood in their saliva when brushing their teeth in the morning or at night.  Should you encounter any of these signs of infection, consult a Miami dentist immediately.  Additionally, consider the following 5 precautions in safeguarding against gum disease:

1) Brush and Floss Nightly—it takes only 48 hours for bacteria to infect the gums.  If you go to sleep with food particles in the nooks and crevices in your teeth, you give bacteria a winning chance of festering and infecting your gums.

2) Schedule regular dental cleanings—adults should schedule a dental cleaning about ever 4 months, and children every 6.  By visiting a dental professional regularly, you are able to stay on top of the development and removal of plaque from your teeth.

3) Choose Invisalign if you are getting braces—traditional metal braces have wires and brackets that are permanently cemented to the facades of the teeth.  This hardware can be difficult to clean, and may lead to increased bacteria and plaque cultivation.  When choosing braces, opt for a removable solution like Invisalign clear braces. Patients who use removable braces like Invisalign are better able to keep their teeth and gums clean.

4) Treat Problem Areas with Perio Protect—infected areas may be treated with medicated solutions like Perio Protect.  This system includes two custom made trays to fit the patient’s teeth and treat the gum line with prescription strength medication to slow and combat developing gum disease.

Gum disease is one of the most common and harmful oral infections among Americans.  When left untreated, gum disease can cause loss of teeth and has recently been linked with heart disease.  Should you experience signs of gum disease, particularly bloody saliva, consult a dentist in Miami immediately.  The Perio Protect system is just one effective means of treatment that is available through your local dental professional.

A Miami Dental Concern: Cookies and Cavities

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

miami-dental-concerns-cookies-cavities

The only thing worse than receding holiday cheer is discovering you have a cavity in February!  It is not as uncommon as you may think.  The holidays bring family, friends, and sweet treats together for days on end.  High spirits overshadow daily routine, and you may find yourself taking a nap with a mouth full of cookies!  Take a moment to review the basics with Assure a Smile, and make a cavity free start in 2011.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

There are many reasons to let your oral hygiene suffer during the holidays.  Whether you are traveling, napping  after dinner, or overwhelmed with activities, finding a moment to care for your teeth and gums may seem impossible.  So, keep it simple!  Follow these 3 basic guidelines and help your teeth and gums stay healthy this winter.

Opt for Healthy Cookies

More than likely, you will not make it through the holidays without indulging your sweet tooth.  This is fine, but should be done with tact.  Choosing a healthy alternative to sweets is tough, especially when you are the guest.  When attending a dinner party, save the cookies and other desserts for after dinner.  This will ensure you eat only a couple, instead of ravenously devouring a village of helpless gingerbread men.

When hosting, remember that not everyone enjoys healthy sweets.  Prepare plenty of options using both traditional recipes and low sugar alternatives.  To illustrate, consider making a dozen or so sugar cookies with frosting and sprinkles.  Recreate that same recipe, but substitute applesauce for the sugar.  Lightly top them with non-fat vanilla yogurt, and enjoy!

Brush and Floss Regularly

It is all about the basics, especially when it comes to cavity prevention.  Brushing and flossing is the best way to remove the plaque from your teeth and protect from infection.  Flossing is particularly important; it takes only 48 hours for the food particles between your teeth to infect your gums.  Skip your nightly regiment twice in a row, and you may be in trouble.

Schedule a Dental Appointment for 2011

Start the new year with a dental appointment to make sure all is in order.  This should include a thorough dental cleaning, x-rays, and inspection by a licensed DMD.  Holistic dentistry practices may also include a TMJ scan, additional digital photographs, and additional dental education to arm you with the knowledge necessary to prevent future problems.

Don’t let your oral health suffer in the midst of this holiday season!  Be mindful of sugar intake, brush and floss as normal, and schedule a dental appointment with a local Miami dentist to make sure 2011 gets off to a good start!

Holistic Holiday Wellness with 5 Power Foods

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

miami-dentist-holistic-holiday-wellness

Are you eating enough power foods?  If you are feeling tired, sick, or unusually stressed, that answer may be no!  Eating power foods is easy, effective in boosting immunity to colds, and downright delicious!  Take a moment to review these power food recommendations from your local Miami dentist.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Staying healthy through the winter is usually lost in the midst of holiday planning, gift giving, and travel.  Nevertheless, the combination of cold weather, natural stress, and poor diet makes this time of year ripe with infection.  This season, take a holistic approach to the holidays.  Anticipate getting run down before it happens, and safeguard against sickness by incorporating these 5 power foods in your diet!

Garlic

Yes, it makes your breath smell.  But this cooking-essential is packed with antioxidants to help your body fight the free radicals that lead to sickness.  Garlic is a natural anti-inflammatory, as well.

Suggested Use:  Chop garlic and sauté over medium heat in coconut oil.  Add onion, cooking until onion becomes clear.  Next, add broccoli, carrots, snap peas, or your favorite vegetables.  Cook until vegetables become tender.  And Voila!  This garlic vegetable medley goes well with chicken, beef, and pork entrees.

Broccoli

These tiny tree-like vegetables are a triple threat.  Loaded with naturally occurring vitamin A, C, and glutathione (a high powered antioxidant), broccoli is an absolute must this Holiday Season.

Suggested Use:  Sautee broccoli in garlic and coconut oil (see above).  Add egg whites, scrambling until all contents are cooked thoroughly.  The result:  a broccoli omelet with enough vitamins and antioxidants to power through the toughest December morning.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are more than just a great energy source.  These guys contain high concentrations of vitamin A and beta carotene, an antioxidant known for disarming malicious free radicals.

Suggested Use:  Rinse potato well in water.  Slice into thin circular disks.  Sautee in garlic and coconut oil (see above).  Serve as is, or combine with egg whites, peppers, and onion for a hearty potatoe-scramble.

Acai Berries

It’s hard to visit the grocery store without finding 101 different acai juices, nutrition bars, pills, or powders.  Acai berries are more than just a fad, however, containing overwhelming amounts of antioxidants per serving.  Opt for the whole berries, whenever possible.  This will give you the added benefit of consuming the berry’s skin and pulp, which is naturally rich in fiber.  If you cannot find whole berries, choose a quality Acai juice.

Suggested Use:  Consume 1 cup of whole berries, or a single 8 oz glass of juice, with breakfast and dinner.

Mushrooms

We saved the best for last.  Mushrooms are a necessity when it comes to building a strong immune system because they naturally have high amounts of B vitamins, niacin, and riboflavin.  Moreover, the selenium in mushrooms helps the immune system fight off viruses and bacteria.

Suggested Use:  Sautee mushrooms in garlic and coconut oil (see above).  Add your favorite vegetables, and serve over brown rice.

Don’t let the hectic Holiday Season get you run down.  Simple additions to your daily diet can fuel your body with the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants necessary to ward off infection and keep you healthy.  Happy Holidays, from this Miami dentist and Assure a Smile team!

Warning: Too Much Fluoride!

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

miami-dentist-warning-too-much-fluorideSince the 1945 communities have been adding fluoride to water supplies.  At first, the purpose was to improve general public health by treating water to help strengthen teeth.  Now, however, modern research shows fluoride treatments can pose serious dental risks.  Overuse of fluoride may cause hidden caries, illusive areas of plaque that may cause major dental problems.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Like most technological advances, fluoridated water treatments were first implemented to improve the general health of the community.  In those days, fluroride was recognized as a beneficial chemical that could strengthen the enamel of a tooth.  The theory was simple and straight forward:  if you strengthen the enamel of the tooth, you make the tooth less susceptible to plaque and bacteria.

Soon, other companies began to capitalize on this notion.  Toothpaste companies and general dentists alike begin incorporating fluoride in toothpaste and dental cleanings, respectively.  Today, Aquafresh even offers a new toothpaste deemed “revolutionary” for its ability to send fluoride gel in between teeth, providing deep cleaning.  With significant amounts of fluoride in public water, consumer products, and dental cleaning procedures, one may wonder if we are suffering from too much of a good thing.

Too Much Fluoride?

If a little fluoride strengthens teeth, then a lot really strengthens teeth, right?  Wrong.

Fluoride has the ability to strengthen teeth to an unnatural extreme.  When this happens, several things may result including hidden caries and increased rate of gum infection.

Hidden Caries

Hidden caries are areas of plaque or bacteria infection that are usually undetectable with the naked eye.  These areas propegate deep within the grooves and pits of teeth, most commonly among the molars.  Hidden caries are thought to be caused by unnaturally tough, impenetrable tooth enamel.  The pits of teeth are inevitably weaker than the sides and surface, both because of reduced exposure to fluoride and regular cleanings.  As a result, these deep, hard to reach areas are infected because of their weakness relative to the rest of the tooth.  Plaque (get more from AS)

Assure a Smile is well educated and attuned to the problems that excessive fluoride exposure may cause.  The Diagnodent Laser, for example, uses laser technology to detect hidden caries and other infections that may be caused by fluoride overload.  Patients may seek to limit their exposure to fluoride in the following ways:  filter tap water to remove fluoride, avoid fluoride enriched toothpaste, avoid regularly rinsing with fluoride mouth rinse, and seek a dentist in Miami who understands the risks associated with fluoride and treats patients accordingly.

Wisdom Teeth and Stem Cells?

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

miami-dentist-wisdom-teeth-and-stem-cellsWe know that holistic dentistry aims to preserve healthy smiles through minimally invasive procedures.  This usually means that drilling, grinding, and tooth removal are avoided whenever possible.  Holistic professionals believe in preserving the body in its natural state for many reasons, longevity being at the top of the list.  However, new research shows an almost unimaginable benefit to preserving your natural body:  Keeping your wisdom teeth, the four rear-most molars of the upper and lower jaw, preserves copious amounts of tissue rich in stem cells!

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

As a Miami dentist and holistic health professional, I err on the side of caution when contemplating tooth removal.  At Assure a Smile, teeth are never removed, shaped, or drilling unless it is absolutely necessary.  There are several reasons for this, including:

  1. You get only one set of permanent teeth, and each has only so much enamel.
  2. Once enamel is gone, it’s gone.  You cannot regenerate the enamel of a tooth.
  3. It is sensible to do all we can to preserve permanent teeth and their enamel to promote long term oral health.

New studies, however, indicate an added benefit to keeping your teeth.  Researchers at the Japan National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology have found the tissue of the 3rd molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth, to be ideal candidates from which stem cells can be obtained (i).

Stem cells are cellular structures that are capable of growing into various specialized cell types.  Stem cells have an almost infinite application in modern medicine, as they can be programmed to develop into any number of specific structures.  Doctors hope to use stem cells to further many fields of research pertaining to cancer, diabetes, and organ replacement.

Obtaining stem cells is difficult.  The most versatile are known as embryonic stem cells and can be obtained only from an embryo.  However, many feel that it is immoral to extract these cells from a human embryo, greatly limiting modern medicine’s ability to further research their application.

Obtaining adult stem cells is somewhat easier, as they may be harvested from an individual’s skin cells or bone marrow.  These processes have limitations as well; skin cells do not propagate nearly as well as other stem cells, and bone marrow extraction has several serious inherent risks.

Wisdom teeth, however, may be the best source of adult stem cells.  The Japenese research time found wisdom teeth to have a substantial population of mesenchymal stromal cells similar, but much more accessible, to bone marrow (ii).  This marks an exciting discovery of a new, viable, and available source of adult stem cells.

Why See a Holistic Dentist?

Friday, November 5th, 2010

why-see-a-holistic-miami-dentist

Holistic dentistry seems to be just another part the go green fad that’s been building momentum over the last decade.  Many mistakenly categorize the idea of holistic health with the likes of organic veggies, overpriced antioxidant super drinks, and trendy yoga studios.  However, holistic dentistry is not a mere fad.  Holistic ideals predate the advent of modern medicine, illustrating a timeless concern for the interconnected nature of the human body.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Assure a Smile Miami Dentistry was built upon the idea that information is power.  The more a patient knows, the more he or she can take proactive steps towards keeping their teeth and gums healthy for life.  Much of this ideology stems from the principles of holistic medicine.  Holistic medicine, and in our case holistic dentistry, views the body as a complex but unified system.  If there is a problem with one piece, that problem may manifest itself through another piece.

To illustrate, consider a patient who has very good oral hygiene but a few minor fillings.  Despite their regular brushing and flossing, the patient continues to develop minor cavities that need correcting.  There are two ways dentistry may approach this problem:

Traditional Dentistry

Traditional dentistry tends to be reactive.  When a patient has a cavity, the plaque is drilled away from the enamel of the tooth and the cavity is filled.  The patient is given brief instruction on proper brushing and flossing techniques, but much of this is already known.  Further, the patient leaves with little additional knowledge to help protect themselves from future cavities.

Holistic Dentistry

Holistic dentistry looks at the very same patient and asks why.  What is the big picture?  Why does this person—who takes relatively good care of their teeth—continuing to develop cavities?  Assure a Smile thinks of this approach as people dentistry, and we help patients identify the causal factors that contribute to their oral health problems.  The patient described above may habitually grind their teeth, slowly weakening their tooth enamel over time.  The pH balance in their mouth may be naturally acidic, and they may benefit from avoiding drinks like orange and grapefruit juices.  There may be several underlying factors that contribute to a patient’s oral problems—and holistic dentistry aims to identify, explain, and diffuse each one individually.

Much like holistic dentistry, Assure a Smile gives each patient the undivided attention necessary to uncover the causes of their dental ailments.  Once the root of the problem is identified, the patient can learn how to prevent future problems and avoid long hours in the dental chair.
