Assure a Smile Explores Holistic Dentistry

Assure a Smile Explores Holistic DentistryHolistic dentistry is a field  that emphasizes alternative approaches to dental care that take into consideration the dental health of the patient involved and the overall effect of this on the whole body. There is also a body that was formed on this called Holistic Dental Association that provides guidance to holistic practitioners and other alternative dentistry. The body also informs the public on the benefits of going for holistic dentistry for their overall health and well-being.

Holistic Dentistry and Health Care

Holistic dentistry practitioners have the very same educational background and license as traditional dentists.  Holistic practitioners exceed traditional realms of thought by also learning of more general physical and mental fields of health.  This may include a diversity of subjects ranging from general nutrition to basic psychology.  An extended body of knowledge makes holistic dentists cognizant of the “big picture” of health.  Practitioners understand that a cavity does not merely need filled; rather, the underlying cause of the cavity must be found and alleviated to prevent future decay from occurring.

In this way, holistic practitioners have a view of contemporary dentistry that is refined by larger principles of physical and mental wellness.  A few noteworthy differences include the following:

Amalgam fillings

Holistic dentistry is strongly against the use of amalgam as a material in dental fillings as this is known to contain mercury and some other potentially toxic materials. Although the mercury is enclosed into the filling, it is found that mercury vapor escapes and this is then absorbed into the body. This is mostly the case when consuming hot foods and this increases due to the friction involved in chewing.

The mercury released then accumulates in some organs and this can also find its way into the maternal milk of a lactating mother. The accumulated levels will be low at first but these will increase with time and this eventually leads to some health problems more so when the immune system is compromised. Some of these health problems include:

1) Decreased kidney function

2)  Increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria present in the intestines

3) Muscle aches and dizziness among others

Root canal therapy

Inside a tooth is a dental pulp and this contains the nerves, veins, arteries and lymph vessels. This is a very major part of the tooth and when it is injured, the body tries to repair it but failure for the pulp to heal will see it die. This can happen if your tooth is fractured or if it has a deep cavity as this will expose the pulp to the bacteria found in the saliva. Root canal therapy is used to remove the affected nerve and the pulp from the tooth through drilling.

Holistic dentistry argues that after drilling out the affected nerves, there are some microscopic tubules that are left and these are impossible to fill. The bacterial in these tubules therefore continue to survive after the root canal therapy and they can escape from the tooth to other parts of the body where they can cause infections. This is why holistic dentistry recommends tooth extraction as an alternative to canal treatment.

Fluoride and fluoridation

Many toothpaste companies will advertise about the wondrous health benefits of fluoride in their toothpaste but holistic dentists are very much against this. They argue that there are no studies supporting this and also say that fluoride is a toxic substance that can cause harm to the body.

Generally, there are other dental practices that holistic dentistry is against and all these are meant for the general body health of the human being. One should also understand that the condition of your teeth and gums greatly affects your body health. Ensure that you have regular dental exams, brush and floss at least twice every day more so after meals.

Why Yogis Will Love Holistic Dentistry

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

miami-dentist-why-yogis-will-love-holistic-dentistryYogis and holistic dentists have at least one thing in common.  Each concentrates on the big picture at hand.  For Yogis, this includes using stretches and breathing techniques to unveil the connection between the mental and the physical.  In the same way, holistic dentistry seeks to connect oral conditions with the overall health of a patient’s body systems.  Both practices seek to understand cause and effect relationships and recognize that the genuine change—be it mental or physical—requires more than mere reactionary quick fixes.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Yoga has split into several unique sects of ideologies over the years.  Each has a common ancestry, however, having been born in ancient India.  References to yoga poses and practice have been discovered on tapestries dated as early as 1700 BC.  Despite its revolution into so many different styles, most yoga practice still has a common goal:  to unite the mind and body as one.

The mind-body connection is at the root of yoga practice.  Yogis, avid yoga practitioners, believe that uniting the mind and body is the key to overall spiritual wellness.  In this way, yoga seeks to combine the tangible body with the mysterious and intangible mind.

Modern medicine supports this seemingly strange idea that our minds have a profound affect over our bodies.  Researchers at the University of Illinois, for example, write of a link between high levels of stress and the immune system.  Their research indicates that as physical stress increases, the ability of the immune system to function decreases (i).  Mental stress, it seems, has the ability to affect physical change.

Holistic Dentistry:  Mouth/ Body Connection

Holistic dentistry shares a common ground with yoga.  Yoga sees the mind as an integral part of overall health, with mental problems being manifested through the body.  By the same token, holistic dentistry sees the overall health of the patient as being intricately linked to both their mental and physical wellness.  A stressed and anxiety-prone patient, for example, may exhibit stress fractures, poor diet, and a corresponding predisposition to tooth decay.  While traditional dentists view a patient with these symptoms as an individual who needs a filling or two, holistic dentists see something different.  They see a patient who needs help with stress management, eating well, and oral hygiene education.

Think ‘Holistic,’ and Achieve Overall Wellness

Of course, just because you enjoy yoga does not mean you will enjoy visiting a holistic dentist.  There is a significant overlap in ideology, however, so you may want to consider it!  At Assure a Smile, we refer to our approach to dentistry as people dentistry.  The professionals at Assure a Smile are primarily concerned with the overall wellness of the patient, just as Yogis are concerned with the overall well being of their mental and physical bodies.

Dentists in Miami: Minimally Invasive Technologies

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

dentist-miami-minimally-invasive-technologiesHave you traveled through Brickell or Downtown Miami lately?  You may have noticed that the stretch of Brickell Avenue running between the new Metropolitan Center and the Miami River has aptly been renamed Avenue of the Americas, reflecting the city’s reputation as world class melting pot of North and South American culture.  Many things are stirred together in this wonderful city of ours, and none is more valuable than the medical professionals who migrate to Miami from all over the world.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

The Miami melting pot stirs together many different cultures, traditions, and technologies.  Together, this amounts to a wildly diverse and rapidly advancing environment that is incredibly exciting to be a part of.

The medical industry in Miami is particularly fast paced and exciting.  From leading cancer research at the University of Miami to advanced international research centers in Doral, our metropolitan area is rich in technologies and professionals from around the world.

Of particular excitement to Miami dental professionals:  evolving minimally invasive technology.  To be invasive means to cut or break the skin, or otherwise come into contact with the internal aspects of the body.  Minimally invasive technology, then, includes pieces of equipment that allow licensed health professionals to perform procedures on patients with the lowest possible amount of intrusion.  For Miami dentists, these technologies include:

Waterlase Dentistry

Waterlase Dentistry uses Hydrophotonics, a leading edge process that combines a laser and water to perform several different procedures on the teeth, gums, and bones of a patient.

Diagnodent Laser Detection

The Diagnodent Laser surveys teeth for bacteria, caries, and structural weaknesses using laser fluorescence.  The results from the Diagnodent Detection can then be used to show patients where problems are likely to occur, as well as areas that need treated immediately.

Invisalign Clear Braces

Miami Invisalign treatments have grown in popularity because the process involves clear, comfortable, removable aligners.  These aligners are worn instead of permanently cemented metal brackets and wires, making the braces treatment more comfortable and convenient for the patient.

Assure a Smile is a leading practice of dentists in Miami.  Located in South Miami, adjacent to Baptist Hospital, the office is accessible for the residents of Kendall, Coral Gables, and Pinecrest alike.  Patients even commute from as far north as downtown Miami to receive Invisalign clear braces treatments, as well as other minimally invasive dental procedures.

What is Holistic Dentistry?

miami-dentist-what-is-holistic-dentistry

Whether new to Miami or simply in search of a new health care professional, you may notice an increasing number of doctors, dentists, and other specialists who claim to be holistic.  Like many, you may be confused as to how holistic health professionals differ from traditional ones, and you may be wondering if a holistic professional is right for you.

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

To understand holistic medicine, and holistic dentistry in particular, we must first look at the origin of the word itself.  Holistic comes from the Greek word holism, a term that means total, whole, and entire.

Holistic dentistry, like other holistic practices, looks at an individual as if they were a puzzle.  Like a puzzle, patients are an intricate system of different pieces that are interconnected, each one affecting the next.
This also reflects the idea that a single system, like a human being, is more than the sum of several individual parts.   Holistic medicine uses this concept when treating patients.  For holistic dentists this idea means looking at much more than simply the teeth and gums.   At Assure a Smile, we like to think of holistic dentistry as being people dentistry; an examination of the entire patient.

Dental cleanings for example, begin with a full TMJ scan to better understand the entire head, neck, and jaw area of a new patient.  This is important because a patient may experience pain or discomfort in their mouth that is actually caused by a problem located outside of their mouth.  These problems are often overlooked by traditional dental cleanings that do not inspect the head, neck, and jaw.  Patients are often referred to other specialists as a result, prolonging diagnoses of the problem.

Holistic dentistry also seeks to preserve teeth in the most natural state possible.  Excessive drilling, grinding, and tooth removal are avoided and typically reserved as a measure of last resort.  Instead, non-invasive procedures are used to straighten, strengthen, and enhance oral health.

Perio protect is one such system Assure a Smile recommends to patients with gum disease.  Invisalign clear braces are another non-invasive treatment Assure a Smile offers, specifically to patients who wish to realign their teeth for both aesthetic and hygienic reasons.  These treatments are safe relative to other traditional chemical and invasive treatments, respectively, helping to preserve long term oral health.

Breathe Easily with White Fillings

miami-dentist-breathe-easy-with-white-fillingsAmalgam (silver) fillings may be 50% or more mercury.  This poisonous substance affects each major body system in some way.  When it comes to the human body’s respiratory system, mercury acts with

Comments by Dr. Ted Herrmann:

Dental amalgams are typically referred to as silver fillings because of their grayish-silver coloring.  These metal mixtures contain various amounts of tin, silver, and worst of all mercury.  The larger the filling, the higher the mercury content.  Big fillings, in fact, may be composed of upwards of 50 or 60% mercury.

When it comes to mercury accumulation in the human body, experts at the World Health Organization say that dental amalgams contribute the highest amounts—higher than any other sources combined (i).  This is because the mercury–based fillings emit mercury vapor over time, causing the patient to inhale the odorless and tasteless gas regularly.

Holistic dentistry professionals specialize in removing toxic fillings, however, greatly reducing the health risks associated with silver fillings.

Respiratory System Function and Methyl Mercury

Methyl mercury inhibits respiratory function in several ways.  Once it is inhaled, the vapor travels down through the lungs and into capillaries in an effort to reach the bloodstream with oxygen and other non-fatal gases.  As the mercury vapor accumulates in the capillaries and blood, there is a marked decrease in cell respiration (ii).  Essentially, as mercury content increases, the ability for the cells to create energy through respiration decreases.

Additionally, methyl mercury accumulates in the blood and attaches itself to red blood cells.  As this happens, red blood cells are unable to circulate less oxygen throughout the body (iii).

The safe removal of mercury fillings is the only way to dramatically decrease the amount of mercury vapor to which you are exposed.  Replacing fillings made of dental amalgam with white fillings will eliminate mercury inhalation, as white composite fillings contain no mercury.  It is important to consider that no amount of mercury exposure is safe.  What’s more, mercury has an additive effect on the body, becoming more concentrated and toxic over time.  If you have silver fillings, schedule a dental appointment online with the holistic professionals at Assure a Smile to discuss treatment and detoxification plans.
