Dental Care for Children

Adults know how to go about ensuring proper oral care. When it comes to children, however, this can prove to be a little more challenging. When is the right time to introduce brushing, or flossing for that matter? A few basics can help you start becoming proactive about your child’s health.
The teeth start to form well in advance before they can be seen and are fully developed within the jaw of an infant. For the first six months, you may wish to consider using a warm washcloth to gently remove bacteria from the mouth of the child a couple of times a day. Once the teeth start to show, switch a soft, infant friendly toothbrush and use water to remove bacteria. Around age two, you can begin to teach your child how to spit once the brushing is done so that they do not swallow any loose plaque. Speak to your holistic dentist to determine when is the best time to incorporate a toothpaste free of fluoride into the routine.
Speaking of the dentist, it’s important to instill in your child that dentists are people meant to be kind individuals that are there to help. You may wish to schedule an early visit to the dentist so the child can become acquainted with the dentist and vice versa. Regular follow-ups will ensure the child’s oral health remains in good shape as they grow up.
Don’t forget to emphasize that as the child grows, flossing is an important part of the oral care routine. Consider making flossing sessions an activity you do alongside your child to encourage them from an early age.
