Your Mouthwash May Be Doing More Harm Than Good

Could your mouthwash be causing you unnecessary harm? Many of the over the counter mouthwashes unintentionally kill the body’s bacteria while they’re getting rid of the bad ones, and that can cause problems in the body.

A study published in Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology examined a group of healthy adults that had not used antibiotics within the last three months and did not suffer from high blood pressure. For a week, they were asked to rinse twice daily with chlorhexidine, a powerful antibiotic mouthwash frequently prescribed post surgery or to patients that have gum disease.

After the week, they were to return to their standard oral hygiene routine.
Twice-daily use of chlorhexidine was associated with a significant increase in systolic blood pressure after just a week of use and recovery from use resulted in enrichment in nitrate-reducing tongue bacteria. Essentially, blood pressure was elevated as the bacterial communities changed. Once participants stopped using the chlorhexidine, health-supporting bacteria returned.
